Surface treatment

Blasting and wet painting under the same roof as the welding, in two booths connected by rail so a blasted structure is primed before it can flash-rust.

What it is

A compressed-air blasting chamber of 8 000 x 5 000 x 3 000 mm prepares the steel to EN ISO 8501-1 Sa 2½, the preparation grade the group publishes for this hall. The chamber is connected by rail to a Polin AC spray and curing booth of 7 900 x 5 000 x 4 890 mm, where wet paint systems are applied and cured at 75 to 80 °C.

The paint system is the drawing's: primer and top coat to the specification and RAL shade the order states. Machined faces are masked before blasting and protected for transport after painting. A coating thickness report is issued on request.

Hot-dip galvanising is arranged with a galvaniser on request; it is not an in-house process and no capacity is claimed for it here. Powder coating is not offered.

What it is used for

  • Blasted and primed weldments ready for the customer's top coat
  • Two-coat wet paint systems on frames, conveyors and housings, to RAL
  • Painted access steel and platforms where galvanising is not specified
  • Hoppers and tanks painted outside, with the inside as the drawing states
  • Galvanised platforms, walkways and conveyor structures, arranged on request

What it does not cover

  • Powder coating: not offered
  • Hot-dip galvanising in house: arranged with a galvaniser on request, no in-house capacity
  • Pieces larger than the blasting chamber or the paint booth in one piece: confirmed per enquiry
  • Metallising, electroplating and other coatings: not published, ask in the enquiry

Anything not listed is quoted per enquiry, with the drawing.

What it means for you

Blasting and painting are in house and the two booths are rail connected, so a part goes from blast to paint without waiting outside and without flash rust in between. That sequence is most of what a coating specification is really asking for.

The honest limits matter more than the capability. There is no powder coating and no galvanising bath in this hall. Galvanising is done through a partner, which means transport time and a design that has to allow for venting and drainage; powder coating is not offered at all, and where a customer needs it the part is delivered as welded for their own line.

The standards that apply

Preparation is to a stated grade; the coating system itself is the customer's specification, not ours.

  • EN ISO 8501-1: preparation grade Sa 2½, the grade published for this hall
  • Where a drawing specifies a paint system to EN ISO 12944, that system is what is applied; its durability class and environment category are set by the customer
  • Dry film thickness is measured and reported when the order asks for it
  • Hot-dip galvanising is done by a partner to the specification the drawing carries; the partner's certificate is passed through
  • Powder coating is neither done here nor subcontracted, and no powder coating standard is claimed

Questions about this process

What is the largest part you can blast and paint?
The blasting chamber is 8 000 x 5 000 x 3 000 mm and the Polin spray and curing booth is 7 900 x 5 000 x 4 890 mm. A structure longer than that is finished in sections and assembled after coating.
Do you powder coat?
No. It is not offered and it is not subcontracted. Where a part has to be powder coated, we deliver it as welded, or blasted and primed if that suits your coating line, and you coat it.
Can you hot-dip galvanise?
Through a partner, not in this hall. It is worth deciding early: galvanising needs vent and drain holes designed into the part before it is welded shut, so it changes the drawing and not just the finish.
What preparation grade do you blast to?
Sa 2½ to EN ISO 8501-1, which is the grade published for this hall and what most coating systems specify. A different grade is agreed on the drawing.
Do you paint the inside of a tank or a hopper?
Where the drawing specifies it, yes, inside and out. It has to be on the drawing, because internal coating changes the sequence: it is done before the body is closed.

Anything not answered here is answered by return of email. Send the drawing with the question and the answer comes back against your part rather than in general.

Surface treatment is the last step for most groups, and it is the one where the drawing has to have decided something before the steel is cut.
