Machined weldments, ring frames and heavy plate parts
Parts where the machining is the point: a ring frame of two flat rings on slim posts, a drum body with flanges and raised lugs, a bearing plate with a flange ring and bosses, a perforated tube plate with fields of drilled holes, a foundry flask frame with trunnions, a pattern carrier frame with slotted flange strips, a comb plate assembly. Welded first, then turned, bored, milled or drilled to the drawing.
The gallery holds these parts from a plate of a metre and a quarter to a ring frame of three and a half metres.
What the drawing must show
A part like this is priced from the drawing. The quotation is fastest when it carries:
- The machined dimensions with their tolerances, and the datum they are measured from
- The hole fields with their positions and the hole tolerance
- Plate thicknesses and the material grade
- Weld symbols and whether welds are machined over
- The finish, and the machined faces that stay bare

- Overall size, L x W x H
- 3 520 x 3 449 x 1 510 mm
A ring frame made of two flat steel rings linked by a circle of slim vertical posts and a central post, with bolted pads, bracket lugs and segmented plate joints around both rings. The row of lifting lugs and bolted brackets spaced around the upper ring stands out. It measures about 3.5 m long, 3.4 m wide and 1.5 m high. Parts like this are tacked up on a fixture and welded through, with every bore and pad cut after welding.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 2 410 x 888 x 888 mm
A drum body like this is built from a cylindrical shell with a wide flange at each end, one flange carrying a stepped bore and stub shaft, the other an open bore. Rows of raised lugs run around the shell in staggered bands, with stepped joint lines marking the shell segments along its length. It measures about 2.4 m long and 0.9 by 0.9 m across. Such parts are welded out on a fixture, then bored and faced on the boring mill.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 1 310 x 1 300 x 222 mm
A bearing plate like this is a square drilled plate with a raised round flange ring welded at its centre, stepped down in two tiers, with three round bosses and a pair of triangular lifting lugs across one edge. The machined bore in the flange ring and the bolt circle of drilled holes around it stand out. It measures about 1.3 by 1.3 m, and about 0.2 m high. Parts like this are set on a fixture, tacked and welded out.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 1 540 x 54 x 1 540 mm
A thick round steel plate with a bolt hole ring at the rim and segmented fields of closely drilled tube holes across the face, divided by plain bands into wedge sections. The dense, even pattern of bores stands out, framed by a clean machined outer edge. It measures about 1.5 by 1.5 m, 0.1 m thick. Parts like this are laser cut from plate up to 20 mm, tack welded on a fixture and welded out, with the bores and pads machined after welding.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 3 144 x 2 200 x 300 mm
A foundry flask frame like this forms a flat rectangular box of deep plate walls, stiffened along both long sides by welded ribs, with two internal cross members dividing the open interior. Folded guide strips run along the top edges, and a round trunnion sits on each short side near a pad with bored holes. It measures about 3.1 by 2.2 m, standing 0.3 m high. Such parts are set on a fixture, tacked and welded out, then bored and faced on the boring mill.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 3 248 x 2 100 x 434 mm
A pattern carrier frame is a flat rectangular plate structure with deep side walls, its top divided into six open fields by a grid of cross members. Slotted flange strips run along both long sides, with round bosses set into the end walls and a short center boss standing proud of the grid. It measures about 3.2 by 2.1 m, with a 0.4 m depth. Such a part is tack welded on a fixture and welded out, then machined after welding on a horizontal boring mill.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 2 874 x 456 x 1 039 mm
A comb plate assembly made from a curved upright plate in three joined sections, hooked at both top ends, set on a flat base strip. Triangular gusset ribs run along the back, each with a round bore, with lugs and bolt holes through the base. The hooked, bored, ribbed back stands out. It measures about 2.9 by 0.5 m, standing 1.0 m high. Pieces like this are folded over 6 050 mm on the press brake and welded out on a fixture.
Each model is rendered from its own geometry in raw steel, without paint, and is shown as a still. Customer names, machine designations and drawing numbers are not published; part lists and files are not offered. The interactive model above this section is a parametric example, not one of these.
How a part like this goes through the hall
The blank is laser cut and welded, then machined: turned on a CNC lathe with 550 mm swing over the bed or a vertical lathe to 1 100 mm, bored and milled on horizontal boring mills with up to 8 000 x 3 000 x 1 500 mm of travel, hole fields drilled on the mill. The part is measured with a six-axis measuring arm and painted where the drawing allows.
