Machine housings, guards, cabins and covers
The sheet metal around a machine: a cladding set with louvred vent panels, a closed cabin of flat panels with lifting handles, a housing of thick plate with bolted liner plates, a guard enclosure with rounded hoods, a door frame with three openings, a cover with ventilation slots, a machined housing full of bores. Thinner material and tighter tolerances than a frame, so folds replace welds wherever the geometry allows.
The gallery holds housings and guards from a cover of a metre to a cladding set of five and a half metres.
What the drawing must show
A part like this is priced from the drawing. The quotation is fastest when it carries:
- The flat pattern or the folded part drawing with the sheet thickness and the material grade
- Which welds are seen and must be ground flush, and which are left as laid
- Openings, louvres and slots with their positions, and the hardware fitted to them
- For a machined housing, the bores and faces with their tolerances
- The finish inside and outside, and the colour

A machined housing weldment formed from flat steel plate folded into a long narrow box, with top, side and base panels and a flanged base carrying foot tabs. The front wall is pierced with a large round opening, smaller bores and square cut-outs, while internal shelves stiffen the cavity. It measures about 3.3 m long, 1.0 m wide and 1.6 m high. A piece like this is laser cut from plate up to 20 mm and set on a fixture, tacked and welded out.

- 2 777 x 2 485 x 2 190 mm
A machine base built as a welded box of flat wall panels, open at the top, with corner posts, edge angles and bolted lugs along the top rail. One wall carries a stepped, curved recess near its base, and three post brackets rise above the top edge to carry further structure. It measures about 2.8 by 2.5 by 2.2 m. Such a part is tacked up on a fixture and welded through, then machined after welding on a horizontal boring mill.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 1 589 x 1 017 x 1 054 mm
A gearbox bridge housing made from two round plated shells with bolt circles, joined by a flat plated bridge and topped with a box-framed deck carrying rib stiffeners. One shell has a bored seat with a shaped cutout, the other a machined mounting rail along its side, with lifting lugs and small access holes in the plate. It measures about 1.6 m long, 1.0 m wide and 1.1 m high. Pieces like this are welded out on a fixture, with every bore and pad cut after welding.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 2 750 x 2 100 x 1 922 mm
An open machine guard frame made from hollow section uprights and rails, forming three open sides with mid rails and a low panelled section along one side, with small brackets and grating panels set into the base. A raking, ladder shaped brace runs up the front, giving access across the frame. It measures about 2.8 m long, 2.1 m wide and 1.9 m high. Here a part like this is set on a fixture, tacked and welded out, then finished in the blasting and paint booths on site.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 2 174 x 342 x 1 668 mm
A folded steel plate frame forms three tall rectangular openings side by side, with angled jambs, a sloped side rib and a small latch box welded along the bottom edge. The flat front face and trapezoidal outline carry mounting bores for hinges and fittings. It measures about 2.2 m long, 0.3 m wide and 1.7 m high. Pieces like this are set on a fixture, tacked and welded out, cut from plate on the laser bed and folded on the 400 t press brake.
- Overall size, L x W x H
- 1 408 x 1 022 x 454 mm
A closed sheet metal box cover with a flat top, folded side panels and one chamfered corner cut on an angle. Several rows of narrow ventilation slots run along one long side and one end wall, with small bolt holes nearby and a stepped cutout in the top panel. How a part like this goes through the hall
Sheets are laser cut on a 2 000 x 4 000 mm bed with bend reliefs and tab and slot location, folded on a 400 t press brake over 6 050 mm, and welded with the seen welds ground flush. A housing with bores is machined after welding on a boring mill. Painting is in house in a booth of 7 900 x 5 000 x 4 890 mm, cured at 75 to 80 °C; stainless from 3 to 16 mm where the drawing asks for it.
